Why? Um because today I've cried a couple of times over Christmas decorations. Well
OK, there is a little more to it than that. This is me. Evidently I got a new dolly for Christmas. Gosh..I just said "dolly" and I heard my Grandpa's voice in my head. He used to call me "Dolly" sometimes when I was little. I had forgotten that. According to the date on the photo this was Christmas 1967. I would have been 1-1/2 yrs old. I am sitting in my Grandma's living room floor. See the cool Christmas tree stand there to the left of me? It rotated and had the lights on it that from what I understand used to cast different colors on a white tree? Is that right Mom? Well Grandma always had all these little figures and things on the rotating part of the stand. The little black and white figure right by one of
those lights right next to me was a little candle that looked like a
children's choir figure. Here is another picture where you can see them.
You can see two of them in this picture. One near each big globe light. Um need to ask my Mom what is up with the outfit I am sporting in this shot... Nice legs huh? That is my Mom to the right of me and I am thinking that is Grandma next to her. I am not sure if the person on the couch was Aunt Nan or Aunt Sue.
OK.. so fast forward to years later when my Grandma passed away. I was given some of her Christmas decorations and I treasure them. I love that I can look in that picture and see things that are currently in my home. So today we are decorating our tree and opening up my box that had all of Grandma's glass ornaments in it. It also had the little candle choir figures. There were four of them, wrapped in tissue and I thought carefully stored away for this year...
I started unwrapping them and the paper was sticking and I wasn't sure what was going on. Then I realized what they were... then I realized they had melted... and then.. I started to cry. Am I a big baby to cry over little candle figures from 40 years ago? According to the tags on the bottom they cost 29 cents and they came from the dime store. Now they are looking pretty pitiful... rather like burn victims that have survived a fire I am thinking....
They aren't too bad from a distance as I glance at them sitting across the room! I knew they meant something to me but I was surprised how it hit me to know they were ruined. Now I am not sure what to do with them. I may still save them in a box... it would be hard to just throw them away. See... I'm a sap... what can I say. We aren't sure what happened to damage them. The box of decorations they were in also contains our
snow globe collection. A few years after we moved here, a bunch of those were damaged after they were stored in the attic. They must have frozen and the globes cracked and that was the end of that. Those are very important to us too, but I don't even remember crying over those. We started storing that box in our spare room because the temp. is regulated there. Well this past winter we had a pipe break in the attic of that room and had some water damage. We had to crank the heaters up to dry the room and carpet out and we think maybe the box was too close to the heaters? They are the baseboard kind. Guess it doesn't matter. Just still sad to have lost them.
So let me ask you... what is wrong with this picture? We got the tree this far last night and then we spent the evening having some homemade pizza and watching a couple of movies. We got a free two week trial of blockbuster online so we enjoyed 2 free movies last night and have 2 more sitting here! We watched The Proposal and My Sister's Keeper. Both were good! So we are watching TV and first we think the tree flickered... then it appears to be OK. Next thing, All the lights on the top half go off.... then they come back on... It did this for the remainder of the evening. This is a
prelit tree... which is a joke because the only year it worked properly as a
prelit tree was the year we bought it. The 2
nd year it had a black hole which is currently hidden in the corner! This year we have new issues as you can see. Turns out all the light strands are connected with mini extension cord
thingys down the center of the tree and one of those was not working right. Darrel unplugged everything from that one and used our own extension cord and viola! All is fixed! Praying it stays that way because now it is decorated!
SO Happy to have this much done and its not December yet! We also have outdoor lights up!
Yay us!!! I've not finished the rest of the house yet, but these days... less is more. I used to want Christmas in every room of the house. Now.. not so much. I have gotten a little simpler in my old age and the "clutter" in our small house gets to me.. so we've been paring down the last few seasons.
The ornament in the front and back here, both pink... were my Grandmas. They are my absolute favorite! LOVE them. Love that they were hers... love that they are glass and vintage... .love that they are pink and that Grandma liked pink! Love them. The middle ornament was a gift from our friend Ashly. She made it for us last year. She painted a snowman couple... the guy is tall... the girl is short... and she has a pink bow in her hair...
Hmmm I am wondering who she had in mind when she painted those? On the back it says "Jesus loves you snow much." Now how cute is that? As you may have guessed/noticed all the ornaments are mismatched and different. We like to use just a mix of favorite and hand made stuff. It's funny but I tend to hang all my favorites where they will be directly in view from my chair...
Yesterday we mostly spent at home except for going out to walk. Today I gave myself a mini walking vacation and have just been enjoying being at home and starting on our decorations. I've also browsed the net a bit. Really enjoyed looking at the layouts
here. I saved this blog from a link somewhere... can't remember. I don't know if I could pick a favorite. LOVE all the cool stitching, stamping, misting and painting.. Made me want to run to my room and create something. Was reading
this blog and noticed she mentioned
this. Does anyone have one of
these Keurig things? It is goofy that I am interested in this. I am NOT a coffee drinker. I do however really enjoy a good cup of hot tea or hot chocolate and was wondering if I'd like it for that. I noticed you can get
Gloria Jean's hot chocolate. Although..some of the reviews seemed to indicate
this hot chocolate is better. However I don't know why I am even discussing it because I am thinking a big NO on spending $123 for a cup of hot chocolate seeing as how I can do that with my tea kettle and some nestles! Ha! LOVE
this wreath. First how pretty is all the pink... but I love all the ornaments and then hung from that big thick ribbon? I wonder if I could make one? Looks pretty simple. I also came across
this cool Christmas Art Journal! I love how the
kraft Christmas tree is repeated. Great ideas! I noticed
Shimelle is doing her
journal your Christmas class again. She does such cool stuff! I had googled "
Christmas art journal" to see what I ideas I could find and came across
this article. I thought oh cool! Something from
The Scrapping Spot... when I started reading.. DUH... it was an article I had written back when I was on the
DT! Ha!! Too funny when you find
yourself on a google search and don't even recognize it! I've been enjoying Richard Paul Evans books so much lately I ordered
this one and
this one from Amazon last night! I was very happy to find out there was a new one this year, and one I had missed!
Yay! I am IN LOVE with the cool art journals on
this blog. Be sure and scroll down and check out all the images.
Sooo pretty with all the vintage and I love the mix of stuff! Beautiful! Kayla's blog had
this link for baked caramel french toast... sounds like it might be yummy.
Here is another pretty December Daily Book. Might get started on mine tomorrow! I have yet to knit or crochet a thing... but I am determined. I am thinking
this stocking might be fun. It's kind of plain and homespun.. .but that is what I like about it!
Well I need to go get my hair washed for church in the AM, work on my song a little more (also for church), I am thinking of switching purses... and maybe do a manicure or at least touch up the one I have... We are still thinking of getting our
snow globes out too! Hope you are having an awesome weekend.. Blessings!
